Tea Obreht, 25, is the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction.
The novel called The Tiger's Wife, is her first.
The story of a doctor's search for answers to the death of her beloved grandfather, who raised her on colorful legends from his home village, it was hailed as a brilliant debut, and is now a bestseller.
The ceremony, where it was announced that Obreht had won the prize, worth 30,000 pounds, was a glittering affair, held at London's Royal Festival Hall.
