The background is appalling. Caroline Criado-Perez (pictured), who lobbied to have Jane Austen on the £10 note, received threats from twitterers. A distressing amount of the abuse involved -- believe it or not! -- threats of rape.

Why are people so ghastly when 'anonymous'?
It has worsened in the past couple of days: not only rape but bomb threats against her and her female supporters.

It has just been reported that Mary Beard, the Cambridge classics professor who has been presenting some TV programmes on ancient Rome, is now also receiving Twitter threats (again).
There is talk of some prominent women closing down their Twitter accounts.
