Jane Austen promoter sexually abused on twitter

This is from The Telegraph

The background is appalling.  Caroline Criado-Perez (pictured), who lobbied to have Jane Austen on the £10 note, received threats from twitterers. A distressing amount of the abuse involved -- believe it or not! -- threats of rape.

There is a good well-balanced comment in the weekend Financial Times, written by Helen Lewis who is an editor at the New Statesman. Her article is accessible online at:

The FT online page also includes comments from readers.

It has just been reported that Mary Beard, the Cambridge classics professor who has been presenting some TV programmes on ancient Rome, is now also receiving Twitter threats (again).

There is talk of some prominent women closing down their Twitter accounts.
