I am a great fan of Garry Disher and Chris Hammer, so when a librarian recommended Patricia Wolf, I gave this, her first novel, a go. And I liked the book a lot.
This is the first novel from a seasoned journo (published in the Guardian, among other newspapers) so there is something tentative about the plotting. All thrillers nowadays seem to have to have a serial killer, and Aussie thrillers seem to always feature a crooked cop. And the background to the villain came too late.
But there were tons of redeeming features. I really engaged with the characters, and lived with them through the story. I desperately wanted the two good cops to survive and win. And the descriptions of the Queensland far outback were terrific. I look forward to a sequel, and expect to follow this author for quite a little while.
